Having secured its place on trendy brunch and breakfast menus worldwide, the popular avocado now has its very own themed cafe in Abu Dhabi. avobar, the instagrammable concept that originated in Covent Garden, London, is now located in Yas Mall offering diners the opportunity to try the superfood in many guises.
The Abu Dhabi cafe, the first in the region, is an open and bright, minimalistic space on the ground floor of the mall that is surprisingly decorated with bright yellow, not the predicted avocado green. The all-day menu offers a variety of sweet and savoury options for breakfast, lunch and dinner with the avocado as the star of the show. The coffee bar serves a selection of hot and cold speciality coffees and manual brews alongside fresh, healthy creations from the juice bar. Try the zingy Bali, baby with pineapple, ginger, lemon and turmeric or the green machine featuring celery and cucumber.
Many of the dishes are already firm favourites on the London and Hong Kong avobar menus. There’s also regional inspired options such as the date pecan cake (great with a coffee), a baklava croissant and shakshuka with avocado. The Avo Açai Bowl is definitely on my list to try on my next visit. The simple avo toast has been elevated to the avocado avocado toast, a layer of smashed chilli infused avo on sourdough topped with sliced avo dusted with salt, chilli flakes and lime juice. How much avo is too much avo you may ask but having sampled it myself I can testify it was nothing but delicious. There’s also a gluten-free sweet potato option available. The more usual avo choux, a bun filled with avocado cream, tasted better than I expected.
While the menu offers health conscious treats, the fruits themselves, although farmed sustainably, have been on quite the journey from South America which is less healthy for the planet. avobar co-founder Liana Kazaryan foresees more Avobar’s opening in the UAE in the future and perhaps even the company’s own avocado farm.
If you’re an avo lover then avobar is worth a visit especially for a more nutritious start to the day. avobar officially opened in Yas Mall today.
