Himalayan Sound Therapy |EDITION Spa

“Blending timeless philosophies and innovative techniques, the customized treatments feature bespoke scent, sound and touch together with carefully selected products.EDITION Spa

The healing power of sound has been used for centuries and now that age-old therapy is being adopted by the modern day spa as a treatment to cleanse the subconscious mind, improve sleep, stimulate circulation as well as lowering blood pressure and the heart rate.

The EDITION Spa located on the first floor of The Abu Dhabi EDITION hotel is the first and only spa in the region to offer this unique treatment. Part of the spa’s EDITION Rituals, sound therapy can be enjoyed as a standalone hour long treatment or added as a thirty minute massage enhancement. Sound therapy can quell some of the stresses and pressures of modern life especially those associated with the constant use of mobile phones and technology.

Every guest, regardless of their treatment choice, is invited to experience the Himalayan Sound Therapy as a welcome grounding ritual. Guests stand in the large purpose-built grounding bowl that omits the largest amount of vibration and deep tones designed to cleanse participants aura and realign chakras (the seven centres of spiritual power within the body) before entering the sanctuary of the spa. Sound therapy can be used as an ideal relaxation treatment for patients recovering from cancer and medical trauma.

The Experience ~ I experienced the hour-long Himalayan Sound Therapy treatment that works on balancing the mind and body, reharmonizing energy and sending you into a deep meditative state, although this varies from guest to guest.

A range of hammered metal bowls were used, different sized bowls produce and hold their vibration for various lengths of time and when struck, each one produces several layers of tones, frequencies and harmonic sounds. My therapist Martina used two different padded sticks to ‘sing’ the various bowls to create the lingering sounds, in addition vibrating bowls were placed on different areas of the body for the sound and vibration to resonate within.

The results ~ In all honestly I was fairly skeptical about this treatment but found it to be incredibly relaxing and it does re-energise you.

Pros ~ Total relaxation in a fabulous, tranquil environment. I definitely fell into a deep state (the kind were you jerk) but obviously the effect of the therapy changes from person to person. Each guest experiences their own personal journey, some laugh, some see colours, some just fall into a deep relaxed state and others take more than one treatment to experience anything.

Cons ~ The hour-long sound therapy does not include any kind of massage.

Relaxation and wellbeing is key at the EDITION Spa with every little detail of its design, from it’s subtle colour palette and low lighting to it’s comfortable relaxation area, an oasis of plants and lanterns, specifically created to provide the ultimate place to de-stress and unwind. It’s a contemporary spa that offers seven spacious, plush spa suites with private relaxation areas alongside the larger communal area that has a homely feel.

The spa menu offers body treatments and massages including the ‘Build a Massage’ option where you can create a bespoke treatment with your preference of touch, style and oil. Massage enhancements include the sound therapy as already mentioned and the use of a rich, hydrating Oud Body Oil. A two-hour Oud Renewal treatment is also available that includes a full body massage and radiance facial. There are currently two facials, one of which is targeted at men and includes a back massage. Guests can also choose to experience Warm Himalayan Salt Stone Therapy, the first and only one of its kind in the region, which emits 84 essential minerals into the system using Himalayan salt stones and Tibetan healing bowls.

The spa use regional homegrown brand Hammamii that uses natural local ingredients including camel’s milk and dates. Sodashi, the organic Australian Ayurvedic inspired brand that’s one of my personal favourites is also available. Omorovicza, the all-natural beauty treatment, is used for signature anti-aging therapies while Oxygen facials by Intraceuticals are also available. The spa also has a seperate area offering manicures and pedicures using vegan nail polish featuring products by vegan beauty pioneer, Deborah Lippmann, free of the 7 chemicals found in other nail polishes.

I highly recommend a visit to the EDITION Spa and trying the hour long sound therapy. It’s a tranquil retreat offering a full range of treatments for that ultimate pampering session.
