MADE Hotel | New York

Imagine a cozy nest in the city, a place to camp, to refocus, to rest and recharge. MADE Hotel’s guest rooms are intimate retreats made for rising above the city’s round-the-clock din.” MADE Hotel

MADE is a stylish, contemporary boutique hotel located in the heart of NoMad. An outstanding feature of this hotel is the warm welcome, hands down the most enthusiastic and obliging check-in girl I have ever encountered. As first impressions go it couldn’t be faulted. In fact everyone who works at this hotel provided excellent service.

As this was my fourth trip to New York I wanted to stay in boutique hotels and MADE was a top choice. In my experience these hotels tend to have more compact rooms that are usually well designed and quirky with added extras in terms of guest experience and often in great locations, MADE ticked all those boxes.

New York has been pretty much closed down for over a year due to the global pandemic and tourists are only now just starting to trickle back to the city so some facilities have not yet reopened. The lobby at MADE is where it’s all happening, besides the reception area there’s Paper, the in-house popular neighbourhood coffee shop, the lobby bar, lots of comfortable communal seating and plants galore. This area was buzzing with hotel guests, digital nomads and those seeking their caffeine fix.

MADE has 108 rooms of varying sizes including three suites. As we were only staying for one night we opted for a standard king room which was a perfectly adequate size. I would definitely go bigger if you were staying longer, some rooms are interconnecting and others have balconies with Empire State views. Design is key in this modern hotel with innovative features to maximise the space. The low bed, which wouldn’t be out of place in Japan, was housed on a wooden platform with drawers underneath for storage and a concealed safety deposit box. The mattress was super comfy (award winning Hybrid by Leesa mattress I learnt later) with gorgeous Bellino linens and a colourful handwoven headboard and throw.

The room was filled with light thanks to a floor-to-ceiling window (let’s not talk about the view), light wood flooring and a cool concrete ceiling. A series of wall mounted metal piping served as open wardrobes with walnut shelving and pull down desk, there was also an integrated TV and a retro style Revo SuperConnect multi-format radio. The bathroom was not overly big but stunning nonetheless with a large grey stone sink, large walk-in shower, covetable brass fittings, Frette towels and amenities by Davines. Room service is currently suspended due to Covid-19 and bath robes are available on request.

Along with all the design features guest satisfaction is key and with that in mind every guest is gifted a daily coffee or tea and a glass of wine. Now comes the bad news, while we were there Debajo, the lower ground floor tapas restaurant (formerly Ferris) was closed as was Good Behaviour, the rooftop bar. This botanical filled bar on the 18th floor usually serves Tiki-inspired cocktails and craft beers. Even though it was closed we were permitted to take our complimentary glasses of vino there to enjoy the panoramic city views.

Delicious aromas of freshly brewed coffee fill the lobby from 8am thanks to Paper. The friendly barristas serve an array of speciality caffeinated options, teas and baked goods throughout the day and craft cocktails and a selection of wines in the evening. The aforementioned accommodating staff were very happy to suggest places to dine in the nearby area in lieu of the hotel’s dining/drinking options being closed. We tried all of their recommendations for dinner (La Pecora Bianca), drinks (The Breslin at the nearby Ace Hotel) and breakfast (Friedmans). There’s a private patio on the 2nd floor for hotel guests but that was also closed.

MADE is a high-end boutique hotel that offers great design and guest contentment, going above and beyond to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Space may not be key in all the rooms but everything that is offered is well thought out, tasteful and high quality. NoMad is the perfect spot to stay to explore the city, its prime central New York location offers visitors lots of things to do as soon as you walk out the door. Broadway is also just around the corner and the Empire State building, Flatiron, Madison Square gardens and Macy’s are a short stroll away.
