Weekly Photo Challenge: One

There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.” Ansel Adams

This weeks photo challenge is to use a photo that focus on one thing. ‘Every good photograph needs a focal point. It’s the thing that draws the viewer’s eye and tells the story.

My photo of The Sphere was taken in Battery Park, New York last summer. The one-off 25ft bronze statue by German sculptor Fritz Koenig once stood in the centre plaza of the World Trade Center. It was damaged but not destroyed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers. Recovered from the rubble after the atrocity it was reinstalled in the northern section of Battery Park.

Although it remained structurally intact, the statue had dents and holes caused by debris so initially it was relocated to the park on a temporary basis and later formally rededicated with an eternal flame as a memorial to the victims of 9/11. It is now a major tourist attraction.
