Weekly Photo Challenge: Grand

The Giant Buddha is definitely worth the trip. It’s a great escape from the urban pace of Hong Kong Island.” Unknown

This weeks photo challenge is ‘Grand’. The brief was to consider not just the size of something, but also that special element: the “wow factor” of a scene or subject that makes a picture so stunning. That magical quality you’re always out looking for and so excited to capture with your camera.

I have decided to use photos of the Tian Tan Buddha, also known as the Big Buddha located at Ngong Ping, Lantau Island taken whilst on a trip to Hong Kong last year. The large bronze statue of Buddha Amoghasiddhi is a grand monument not only in sheer size and scale (23m high, 26.4m with the lotus and 34m including the base with and weighs 202 tonnes) but also in importance to the Buddhist religion. It is a popular tourist attraction set in the grounds of the Po Lin Monastery. To reach the imposing statue you have to climb a grand staircase of two hundred and sixty steps. The climb is worth the effort not only to see the statue up close but also the amazing views of the surrounding area.

  1. You captured the Giant Buddha really well. The shot helps to give some scale to the size of the Buddha. Are you still abroad? I am in Shanghai right now and if you are in China I’d love to swap some stories.

    1. Thank you 😉 These photos were taken on a holiday to Hong Kong last summer so sadly I am no longer there. Enjoy China, it’s on my to-do-list.
