The latest Weekly Photo Challenge is entitled simply ‘Inside’.
I have chosen some of my favourite photos from inside the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque here in Abu Dhabi, which depict the amazing architecture, design and vision of its creator Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, founder and first president of the UAE. Sheikh Zayed who died in 2004, before his vision of the mosque was completed, is buried in a very simple tomb in a small memorial outside the mosque.
The mosque houses the world’s largest handmade carpet (5627 square meters) and one of the seven crystal chandeliers (above) is the largest in the world (15 meters high and 10 meters in diameter).
