In Pictures | A Postcard From Champoluc, Italy

The hidden gem of Italian ski resorts, Champoluc lies high in the Alps offering three accessible valleys of beautiful pistes (access to 180 km of runs) and an abundance of snow. The Monterosa Ski region located in the Aosta Valley was a wonderful surprise (even more so as I thought we were going to the Dolomites) with its pretty mountain villages, rustic Italian charm, quaint cafes, bars and restaurants. Champoluc was an amazing resort with a free ski bus service, efficient lift infrastructure, glacier views, tree lined runs and brilliant blue skies. Our hotel, the Chalet Hotel de Champoluc was within a few minutes walk to the gondola, a godsend in itself when wearing ski boots and carrying loads of gear.

Not a natural skier even after numerous trips this resort catered for the less confident aka moi as well as satisfying the speed demons that made up our party of four. The scenery was amazing, the snow fabulous, the hotel staff friendly and attentive, there was even a standalone luxury spa offering relaxation and recuperation on a snowy whiteout day. Where French ski resorts are packed and expensive, Champoluc was quiet in comparison, uncrowded with no pushing at the lifts which is a joy and such good value even when eating and drinking on the mountain itself. As expected in Italy the food and coffee was delightful and the local wines and beers went down far too well.
