Looking for a new family-friendly activity in Abu Dhabi? Head down to Mazaraa Farm Shop, a hidden gem in Al Bahyah, that offers visitors a wholesome outdoor activity. There’s an array of fresh produce available to purchase, an outdoor cafe with specialty coffee and fun animal interactions for children.
Mazaraa Farm Shop and cafe are part of Abu Dhabi Organic Farms who are spearheading organic and sustainable farming methods with zero waste, the farm to fork concept that’s proving to be more and more popular with local consumers. Visitors are welcome to wander through the sunflower edged polytunnels where rows of crops are waiting to be harvested or alternatively purchased from the well stocked farm shop.
An abundance of well-priced colourful fruits and vegetables are grown and sold at the farm including tomatoes, sweet potatoes, chillies and eggplants to name a few alongside eggs, juices and jars of homemade pickles. There’s a good selection of olive oil, dates and honey but they are more pricey. The whole concept is well thought out and presented in the style of a traditional farm shop. It was somewhat disheartening that the tomatoes I bought were sold in plastic packaging and the free shopping bags were also plastic (bring your own bags or use the boxes provided).
Younger members of the family can enjoy meeting goats, rabbits, horses, ducks and chickens as well as picking some veggies while learning first hand about how the produce is grown. Highly recommend grabbing a delicious coffee, ice cream or acai bowl and relaxing in the aesthetically pleasing outdoor cafe.
While the farm shop and cafe are free to enter there’s an entrance fee (AED 25 per adult, AED 15 per child 4 & over) for the farm itself which includes complimentary water/juice and popcorn. Small dogs on leads are allowed in the outdoor areas. No advance booking is required but it does get busy at the weekends however to eat at the kitchen you do need to pre-book with the team.
Even with the harsh desert climate local farms are proving that it’s possible to grow a variety of organic fruit and vegetables here in the UAE. A visit to Mazaraa Farm Shop not only provides outdoor fun for all the family but also supports a local business and helps save the environment. A win, win all round.
