Louvre Abu Dhabi | UAE

See Humanity in a new light.” Louvre Abu Dhabi

November 2017 is a historic month here in the UAE as the greatly anticipated Louvre Abu Dhabi is officially unveiled. Located in the cultural district on Saadiyat Island, this architectural waterfront masterpiece designed by French architect Jean Nouvel features an iconic geometric patterned dome that seemingly floats above the museum creating a ‘rain of light’ beneath.

IMG_7871I was fortunate to have a sneak peek inside this amazing space where artworks and artefacts from across the globe are showcased as part of the inaugural exhibition. Twelve galleries, each bathed in light from the skylights above, house everything from period pieces to modern and contemporary installations. This unique intergovernmental partnership between the UAE and France has given the Louvre Abu Dhabi access to borrow works such as key pieces by Leonardo Da Vinci and Vincent Van Gogh among many others.

Some areas have dancing sunrays casting ever changing patterns through Nouvel’s interlaced palm leaf design, others are cooler, shaded and still. Visitors can wander through the displays of archaeological discoveries, ancient pieces, sculptures and paintings by such greats as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Jackson Pollock to name but a few.

After ten years in the making the completion and official opening of this landmark project will be celebrated over four days from 11th November with a full and varied programme of cultural events. Music, dance, poetry, light shows and fireworks along with guided tours will ensure this memorial milestone is embedded in the hearts and minds of attendees.
