In Pictures | A Postcard From Mykonos

Experience, travel – these are as education in themselves.” Euripides

Sunny and glamorous is probably the best way to explain the beautiful Greek island of Mykonos. While the temperature soars in the summer months the rich and famous flock to this little party island in the Aegean Sea, to indulge in everything it has to offer. Early September is an ideal time to visit, the temperature has dropped slightly, the revellers have dispersed somewhat but everything is still in full on visitor mode.

Mykonos attracts a variety of tourists, while it’s still a mecca for gay travellers with lots of nightlife and party beaches it equally welcomes families, couples and a non-stop stream of enormous cruise ships. The windier North is more low-key with some pretty secluded beaches and clear waters while the South is the location of glitzy beach clubs like Nammos, beach parties with renowned DJ’s and sheltered coves to moor your superyacht.

Mykonos Town (Chora) is easily accessible and offers restaurants, bars and clubs for all budgets with plenty of local specialities and freshly caught seafood washed down with a glass of ouzo or a strong Greek coffee. There is plenty of retail opportunities from colourful souvenirs, delicate white clothing and traditional leather sandals to expensive high-end designer goods. Wandering the traditional pretty white and blue streets is a must do even if you find yourself going in circles trying to navigate the near identical narrow passageways that were once the hiding places for pirates.

The famous 16th century windmills sit on a ridge overlooking the pretty area of Little Venice where everyone (us included) gravitates for a sunset cocktail at one of the many bars right on the water’s edge. The teenager and I thoroughly enjoyed our little Greek island adventure, here’s a first look at our trip in pictures 😉
