What better way to say thank you to your mum than taking her for a delicious afternoon tea with spectacular panoramic views over Abu Dhabi. Celebrate Mother’s Day in style this month with the newly redesigned Afternoon Tea in the Sky at the Lounge, Hyatt Capital Gate.
Afternoon tea is served on the 18th floor of this iconic leaning hotel, one of Abu Dhabi’s most famous landmarks. High above the city, the elegant yet cosy and relaxed Lounge is the hotel’s lobby restaurant that offers guests an array of different seating options in the large open area or the more intimate library area. The high winged back chairs next to the window offer the best views of the capital, while larger tables can accommodate more diners. The afternoon tea may follow the traditional presentation but with its own modern twist, the service is attentive but not overbearing, drinks are refilled regularly and plates changed between courses.
With three tiers of sweet and savoury indulgence there’s plenty of choice for everyone including many vegetarian options. It’s not all traditional finger sandwiches and scones (although they are my favourite) but different flavoured breads, creative sweet treats, a glass of bubbly or two (should you so desire) and of course breathtaking sky-high views.
The savoury selections include Scottish smoked salmon with lemon crème fraiche on brown bread, goat’s cheese flavoured with thyme and pumpkin on white bread and chicken with pesto rolled in spinach bread topped with avocado. Afternoon tea wouldn’t be an afternoon tea with a cucumber sandwich and this version is served with datterino tomato on sundried tomato bread.
Freshly baked plain and raisin scones are served with clotted cream, a selection of jams, butter and lemon curd. Individual carrot cakes and a moist chocolate mud cake make up the cake section accompanied by a separate plate of tempting pastries. Pink macaroons, miniature mixed berry tarts and my favourite, the irresistible chocolate caramel lollipops (so yummy I had two). Guests can choose from the Lounge’s exclusive tea selection, hot chocolate, selected beverages and Illy coffee.
The Hyatt Capital Gate holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s furthest leaning manmade tower, the structure leans eighteen degrees westwards which is actually four times more than the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. Located in the centre of Abu Dhabi, this five-star property offers various dining options, well-appointed contemporary rooms and executive suites and is also home to the award-winning Rayana Spa.
